Barefoot Entrepreneurship: Embracing Authenticity on the Path to Success
Join us for an inspiring session with Jessika Buell, owner of two thriving businesses and recognized as the 2019 Entrepreneur of the Year by the Durango Chamber of Commerce. Jessika will take you through her entrepreneurial journey, sharing her remarkable story of starting from scratch without formal business education and achieving tremendous success in her ventures.

Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the various roles you have to play as an entrepreneur? Jessika knows that feeling well. While she may not wear hats, she metaphorically changes shoes all day long, adapting to the demands of her businesses. However, amidst the chaos, Jessika has discovered a sense of solace in the simple act of going barefoot when she returns home to her boys. In those precious moments, she can be solely herself—authentic, unfiltered, and just a mom.

In this inspiring talk, Jessika invites you to join her in taking off your shoes, both figuratively and literally. She will share the most valuable lessons she has learned on her entrepreneurial journey, drawing from her experiences as a business owner and a dedicated mother. As Jessika discusses embracing authenticity and finding balance, her genuine and vulnerable storytelling will captivate you.

Through her transparent narrative, Jessika will provide practical advice and actionable strategies to help you overcome obstacles and excel as an entrepreneur. She also shares the four key principles that have guided her path to success thus far, navigating challenges, fostering genuine connections, and maintaining personal well-being while building thriving businesses.

This session is designed to provide valuable insights and a renewed sense of purpose for your entrepreneurial journey. You'll leave feeling inspired, motivated, and empowered to be true to yourself in all aspects of your life.

Designing a Digital Presence in the Pay-to-Play Era
What does it mean to be present in today's digital environment— and to whom? In this interactive session, we will explore how to leverage the dynamic nature of digital technology to achieve your business goals and create a strong digital presence.

We'll start by discussing the foundations of any digital presence, including websites, email marketing, social media platforms, and the role of things like SEO and paid media. We'll explore how each contributes to building a solid base for your digital presence, mainly from a marketing perspective.

We'll also dive into the topic of relevance. Why is relevance important? This is a huge question today—especially approached from a strictly technical interpretation—with the rapid rise and deployment of ChatGPT and other emerging technologies.

This session will provide you with the knowledge and tools to adapt your strategy to meet your organization's and your audience's unique needs and leverage digital marketing technology efficiently and effectively.

The Art of the MVP: Taking Your Idea from Most Viable to Most Valuable Using Design Thinking
This session is for those who are curious about the secret sauce that makes startups thrive by turning raw ideas into high-value offerings.

An MVP, or Minimum Viable Product, is a simple, usable version of a product with just the essentials to attract early customers.

Design Thinking is a unique approach to innovation, finding the sweet spot where human needs, technical feasibility, and business viability intersect.

When applied to product development, Design Thinking ensures you're not just making a product or solution that "works" and is viable, but one that people DESIRE. It helps you understand your customers' needs, innovate using empathy and creativity, and continuously refine without friction or wasting resources.

In this session, we will approach Design Thinking in the context of physical product development. However, this workshop is relevant to any WSSW participant, as the essential design framework empowers innovation in any industry and can be applied to service and program design. Startups can use Design Thinking to improve multiple areas of their operations, such as customer experience, marketing, and internal processes.

In this workshop, you will:
  • Learn the design thinking toolbox
  • Play with novel approaches to idea generation
  • Discover how to eliminate idea bias through fun and collaboration.
  • Choose practical strategies for implementing your most promising ideas

Meet your facilitator:

Intellectual Property Essentials: Safeguarding Your Ideas & Innovations
Every person and every business owns intellectual property (IP), and developing your IP business strategy is essential. It includes understanding what resources are available and how to find and use them, evaluating your IP assets, knowing your competition, understanding the pace of innovation and opportunities for growth, and determining the best ways to protect your IP.

A solid IP business strategy increases leveraging power and adds value to your company. Whether it's creating and using a brand that distinguishes an owner from other businesses, learning how to demonstratively protect the company's trade secrets, understanding how to protect and exploit copyrighted works to provide the most benefit to a business, investing in a more competitive business decision by applying for a patent or allowing an invention to be published while seeking a patent, ownership should always be the first thought when the work is being done.

In this expert speaker panel session, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of the different types of IP rights and how to establish, monitor, and protect them.

US Patent and Trademark Office's Rocky Mountain Regional Director, Molly Kocialski, will moderate the panel featuring:
  • Donna Arment - Durango Patent & Trademark Resource Center Librarian
  • Yashita Sharma - United States Patent and Trademark Office Patent Examiner and Outreach Advisor
  • Sean Dougherty - United States Patent and Trademark Office Patent Examiner and Outreach Advisor
Whether you are a startup founder or a seasoned entrepreneur, this session will equip you with the knowledge and tools to make informed decisions about your IP assets and develop an effective strategy to safeguard their valuable ideas and innovations.

Entrepreneurial Balance: Enjoying the Journey!
Starting a business can be a time consuming, stressful and extremely difficult endeavor. It can also be greatly rewarding and can provide personal, professional and financial success.

Learning to manage the demands of a startup business is a skill that many founders are forced to acquire on the job. Balancing the work of the business with all the other "things" going on in one's life is challenging, and founders can trend towards workaholism and depression without having the tools to ensure they are keeping the other aspects of their life in balance.

This talk will go over the entrepreneurial path of Leif Ullman, co-founder of tech startup KidReports and the challenges he faced along the way. We will also discuss tools and techniques for keeping a proper balance during the different phases of the journey. Finally, some experiential tools, such as meditation and yoga, will also be practiced briefly by session participants if desired.

You know your company and why you stand apart, but do you know how to present your company's unique value to investors in a recorded video pitch?

A video is a fantastic tool for startup founders to communicate their company's value proposition. It allows you to use verbal, visual, and audio forms of communication that can make your message more engaging and memorable for your audience. Video presentations in pitch decks can increase investment chances by 50% and increase engagement and understanding by 80% compared to text alone.

SCAPE, the Southwest Colorado Accelerator Program for Entrepreneurs, has leaned into this new pitching format since the pandemic. It has helped over 20 local companies record their pitches and gain access to investment capital.

Come ready to learn the dos and don’ts of how to record your pitch. SCAPE’s professional videographer, Alex Wilson, and Program Director, Brittany Cupp, will share their production tips to help you with everything from selfie-style pitches to working with the pros.

Service Provider Industry Lunch: The Art of the Strategic Alliance for Rural Service Providers
To help us make the most of our time together, please read our blog post, which sets the stage for conversations we'll explore at the industry lunch. Click Here.

Across small towns and remote regions, a new generation of entrepreneurs is rising, building flexible new business models that catalyze innovation, fuel job creation, and drive regional prosperity, all while reimagining traditional ways of doing business and creating success on their own terms.

Service provider, solopreneur, consultant, and freelancer—known by many names, you are a micro business owner.

Micro businesses have 1–9 employees, make up 75% of all private employers, and generate over $1 trillion annually. On average, a micro business owner creates at least two additional jobs beyond their own. *

More than "just a service provider," your agility, specialized expertise, networks, and instinct for collaboration and building strategic partnerships are invaluable in a rural entrepreneurial ecosystem where relationships drive business and trust is the engine behind the sale.

Join us for a guided conversation on creating mutually supportive and profitable partnerships with other service providers, micro and small-business owners, support organizations, and startup founders.

We'll explore strategies to establish trust and nurture collaboration by leveraging shared goals and values, including:
  • Balancing collaboration and competition
  • Crafting partnerships beyond transactions
  • Sharing risks and rewards
  • Resources and referral relationships

This interactive session is tailored for micro business owners across a range of service industries, including (but not limited to):
  • Agriculture
  • Artisan & Craft
  • Business Support
  • Community Services
  • Construction & Trades
  • Creative Industries
  • Educational
  • Financial & Legal
  • Hybrid (can be delivered both in-person or remotely)
  • Lifestyle & Wellness
  • Professional/Specialized
  • Technology & Digital
  • Tourism & Hospitality

EsoTerra Ciderworks provides a $14 Local's Deal for Lunch, including a sandwich and salad. Vegetarian options are available; you may also order from their regular menu of sandwiches, charcuterie boards, salads, desserts, and more.

Beating Burnout in Startupville
Entrepreneurship is a demanding journey that can take a toll on even the most determined founders. Many factors drive entrepreneurs to overwork, including the daunting statistic that startups have a 90% failure rate. While founder burnout causes just 5% of startup failures, 63% of business owners reported that they’ve dealt with or are currently dealing with burnout. That statistic gets worse when companies grow: 70% of the C-Suite considers quitting to search for a job that responded to their mental health and well-being, according to Forbes. It's not just a US thing either, global burnout rose to 40% in the first quarter of 2023 (also according to Forbes).

This session is a practical roadmap to preventing and navigating burnout with values-centered processes to achieve key benchmarks, minimize stress, and act from generosity rather than fear of failure.

You will also learn a simple framework to help your body process stress as it arrives to avoid the chronic stress that often afflicts startup founders and teams.

By implementing these strategies together, you can increase the lifespan of your startup so that you and the company you're building can thrive.

Inexpensive and Innovative Idea Prototyping with AWS
In this interactive workshop, we will delve into the world of Amazon Web Services (AWS), a comprehensive and scalable cloud computing platform. AWS provides affordable services suitable for everyone, from budding startups to established Fortune 500 companies.

One of the key strengths of AWS lies in its "serverless" architecture, which fosters the rapid prototyping of new products. We will focus on overcoming infrastructural barriers to innovation, demonstrating how to quickly prototype and demo your idea in the cloud without continuously running servers and thus avoiding high costs. We'll dive into the features of AWS Lambda functions, which only run when used and scale as usage increases.

Throughout the session, we will showcase the power of rapid prototyping and discuss how it can accelerate business outcomes. We'll share a GitHub repository with cloud formation that demonstrates a simple event-driven application to help bootstrap your potential ideas. We'll use Simplesense's 911 alerting product as a real-world example to show how Serverless can effectively manage uncertain usage volume.

The session will feature a hands-on demonstration to help you visualize the possibilities and get you started. We'll also conduct a Q&A segment where we'll build on use cases from attendees' experiences.

Please note, this session will be the most useful for those with some knowledge of cloud-based computing. Join us to unlock the power of cost-effective and efficient prototyping with AWS.

Funding to Grow Your Food Business
Could your food business use an extra boost of funding? Food business entrepreneurs are invited to learn about local organizations offering funding and incentives specifically tailored to support the growth of small food businesses.

Food business entrepreneurs are invited to come to hear from local organizations offering funding and incentives to help grow small businesses. Learn about funding opportunities, eligibility criteria, fund utilization, the application process, and where to seek assistance. You will learn about several funding opportunities, including grants, loans, and incentives.

In this session, we will connect entrepreneurs with local organizations in real time and offer warm handoffs. We recognize that food businesses can be overlooked in traditional startup environments. We are dedicated to ensuring that all entrepreneurs, regardless of their background or industry, have access to the resources they need to thrive, including the opportunity to build relationships with other food business entrepreneurs and industry professionals.

Presented by Tommy Crosby of the La Plata Food Equity Coalition - Food Business Workgroup.

The La Plata Food Equity Coalition is working to improve health equity for BIPOC, Senior, and Rural Residents in La Plata County by enhancing access to healthy food and inclusive community leadership. To achieve this, the food business workgroup studies the obstacles minority-owned food businesses face and provides helpful resources such as a directory, funding options, and networking and educational opportunities.

Exploring the Speed, Security, and Scalability of Static Site Generator Website Solutions
Whether you're a tech-minded founder in the early stages of your startup or a later-stage startup looking for more control and speed, security, scalability, and ease of maintenance, a static site generator (SSG) may be a perfect alternative to hosted solutions like WordPress or Squarespace for creating marketing sites, landing pages, documentation, and blogs.

SSGs have gained popularity due to their ability to create pre-built HTML pages, resulting in optimal website performance. Unlike dynamic content management systems (CMS), SSGs can provide both dynamic content and scalability with ease of maintenance.

Join us for an insightful session as we explore the world of static site generators. We'll discuss the advantages of using SSGs and their use cases.

This session is a must-attend for any startup founder or entrepreneur curious about how NASA innovations can revolutionize your business strategy and operations, and support business growth, whether you're kick-starting a new company, enhancing an existing product, or creating a new product line.

Walt Ugalde, Economic Development Executive at NASA T2X, will guide this session on NASA's strategies and technologies that drive innovation and exploration, highlighting the potential for these technological breakthroughs to create new market opportunities.

Walt will introduce you to the NASA Technology Transfer Program, which ensures that these revolutionary technologies, initially designed for space exploration and discovery, are accessible to the public.

These vast technologies apply to various industries, including health, transportation, public safety, consumer goods, environmental resources, computer technology, and manufacturing.

A key highlight of this session will be introducing the 'Startup NASA' program, a unique initiative designed to help startups license NASA's intellectual property for free for the first three years.

Please note: This talk will take place at Agile Space Industries, which is by the airport. It's about a twenty minute drive from downtown Durango.

Bonus: Join Agile Space for a tour of their facilities after Walt's talk, from 2:00-3:00pm.

Rural Renaissance: The Catalytic Role of Creative Industries in Rural Startup Communities
The creative industries —including art, crafts, design, film, and music— employ over 90,000 Coloradoans and generate over $12 billion in industry earnings annually.*

In rural Colorado, there is a high concentration of creative businesses and experiences, which drive job creation and economic growth and play a critical role in community revitalization and cultural preservation.

Creative professionals play a crucial role in the startup community by providing fresh ideas, perspectives, "design thinking" modalities, and problem-solving in industrial, social, and civic contexts.

In this interactive panel discussion, local creatives and community leaders will share insights on fostering a dynamic interface between creativity, culture, economics, and technology. You will learn how to partner and collaborate with businesses and organizations in the creative industry.

Panelists include:
  • John Clark, Mayor of Ridgway and founding member of its Creative District, who advocates for the arts, public lands, and economic development while overseeing cultural events and working as a glass artist and technologist.
  • Nathan Schmidt, musician, illustrator, and board member of Mancos Creative District, a rural arts organization driving the creative economy in Mancos through collaborative events.
  • TJ Smith, founder of Stray Wild, offering product design and creative services for earth-conscious nonprofits & brands. Owner, The Wilder Gallery, merging love for the outdoors with artistic works. Muralist, celebrating the animals, waters, blue skies, tall trees, and land we call home.

Moderated by:
  • Celeste Herron, Program Lead for WSSW 2023, evangelist for rural economic development, brand storyteller, multidisciplinary designer, and creative director.
